How To Alter Your Trousers

Hi, I'm Claire Louise and I'm a theatricalwardrobe mistress working in the West end of London. Today I'm going to be sharing withyou some of my tips and tricks on how to get the best out of clothing repairs and alterations. In this tutorial I'm going to show you how to alter the waist of a pair of trousers. These trousers have already been fitted andI know that I want to take this much out of the waistband. The first thing I'm going todo , the pins are going through both layers as I'm just lightly making a mark so the pinis just through a single layer of fabric. I'm going to be taking this alteration outon the same amount on either side , so I only

need one side of the fabric to be marked. So now my seam is open again and then I'mgoing to turn it to the inside and I need to unpick all the stitching that holds thiswaistband down so that we can get inside and get this whole thing adjusted neatly . I'vealready unpicked this , for speed, but there's a little row of stitching that just sits inthere and once you've unpicked that then you've got a nice flat area and you can really getinside your waistband. I've just caught my seam allowance there . So the next thing I'm going to do is givemyself a chalk line marking where those pins

are and this is just a rough chalk line . Thenext thing I'm going to do , so that it's easy to access this seam, I'm going to passmy hand through one leg of the trousers and grab the hem of the other leg and this feelsa bit counter intuitive and then I'm going to pull them together so the two legs of mytrousers are now inside each other. What this has done is it's opened out the seam and itmakes it much easier for me to stitch it. And now, I'm going to much more carefullymark this new line. So I want to guide the line towards my original stitching and I wantto take the same amount all the way up through this waistband at the top . And now I'm just going to pin .

And you need to have opened up enough stitchingthat you can easily get right the way through this layer . And now I'm going to take thisto the sewing machine. So I'm starting my machining just a little bit past where theoriginal stitching was. I haven't unpicked any of the stitching beforeI do my new row and this helps keep the two layers exactly together. A little tip forstitching a curved seam is to have a very slight zig zag on it and that allows it tostretch because this is actually is a curve and if it doesn't stretch, often the seamswill split which is why your trousers get holes in its seat. And I'm just going to doa little bit of reversing to start , always

start sewing clothes with some reversing becauseyou don't want it to unravel as you é and if you're comfortable sewing over pins, that'sabsolutely fine. The tricky bit is when you get to the topbecause we've got this sort of folded over layer so I'm going slowly making that niceand easy . I'm using the thumb of my left hand to make sure it's all smooth underneaththere. And again, a little bit of reversing at the top. I'm now going to unpick some of this and trimthis down and then press the seam open. I'm just taking my pins out. It's good to keepquite a bit of seam allowance in the centre

back because you may decide you may want tolet these trousers back out again in the future. Don't cut everything away and I do the trimmingbefore I do the unpicking because often it saves me having to do too much unpicking . I'mgoing to get that seam nice and open . Now a centre back seam on trousers must be openor it won't sit flat. And then I've just got a little bit of unpickingto do on the original stitching just here . Now you can see that we've got a raw edgeand that's fraying so we do need to put a finish on this edge so we're just going torun up the two sides and zig zag over that raw edge. Using a zig zag on a machine isa perfect way of finishing off your

How To Buy Mens Jeans That Fit Understanding Denim Waist Rise Inseam Style Boot Cut

How To Buy Men's Jeans That Fit UnderstandingDenim Waist Rise Inseam Style Boot Cut Hi! I'm Antonio Centeno, the founder of RealMen Real Style. Today, I'm going to be talking about how to buy a pair of jeans that actuallyfit, so I'm going to be going over jeans, denim, the terminology that we use to understandhow they are built. Let me just start off, guys, by saying thatthere is no substitute for going in and trying on a pair of jeans because there are so manyfactors out there. I think it's one of the hardest initiatives. I get people that contactme once every couple of months and they're

starting a denim company or starting a jeancompany, sometimes madetomeasure, and I think that's a very hard business. My hatis off to my friend, Christopher, out in Massachusetts. He has a company, Brown Deim, and they aredoing just that, but this is a very hard business. And so, to get what you really want I knowsome of you guys are really particular. Hopefully, by understanding these five points and thesefive terms, whenever you see this, you'll be able to zero in on what you need and makesure that you don't waste your time. All right, so let me jump right in this. NoticeI didn't even ask you to subscribe or like, or did I just ask you to do ité Okay, so thefive things I'm going to talk about today

guys are the waist, the inseam, the rise, and then we're going to talk about the build right here, the style in the hip, butt, andthigh area, and then we're going to talk about the build down here at the end of the leg. Waist Okay, so let's first talk about the waist, one of the easiest things. We all think we know what we fit into. And in fact, I wear3232. Does that mean I have a 32inch waisté Yesé Noé Waiting for your answer. No. The answer is actually no. That is vanitysizing. So the fact that they tell you, you

have a 32inch waist really means that yourwaist is about 34 to 34.5 inches and it depends on the brand. Some brands are going to giveyou a little bit of extra room; some are going to give you a little bit less. They look attheir target market and they build for that. I don't know who started this vanity sizingor why, but it really throws a wrench in everything and it confuses people, and they really believethat they are a 32inch waist when they're not, or even those of you that are a bit bigger. Now, it also changes, like I said, with brands. So this is where if you are used to one brand, don't think a 3232 in Levi's is going tofit the same as 3232 in Cooper or a 3232

in Wrangler or Lee or any of those other brandsout there, especially when we get into small brands. You could see even more variation. All right, so that is the waist. That one's pretty easy. Rise Let's talk about the rise. What is the riseéThe rise is actually the distance from so if I were to lay this out flat on a table, the rise is going to be from the bottom of the crotch area all the way to the top uphere where the button is at. And so, we normally think of high and low rise. Many of you haveseen that. You didn't know exactly what

it was, but yes, that is the rise. Now, low rise you may not know. A lot of youyounger guys out there wearing lowrise jeans, that started in the women's department, andwomen really liked it, the whole lowrise just because of the way their bodies werebuilt. And then it transferred over to the young men department for whatever reason. Some guys really like the look. I think too much of a low rise is not a greatlook for a man because it shortens his leg line and makes his torso look longer. Someguys like this. I guess if you've got the whole sixpack abs thing going for you, youcould probably pull it off, but for most of
